What makes a digital prescription legally valid in India
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified that digital prescriptions are legally valid — but they must include specific elements for pharmacies to dispense against them.
- ✓ Doctor's full name and qualifications
- ✓ MCI/NMC registration number
- ✓ Clinic name, address, phone
- ✓ Patient name, age, gender, date of consultation
- ✓ Chief complaint (or blank if privacy concern)
- ✓ Prescription details: medication, dosage, duration, timing
- ✓ Doctor's signature (physical or digital)
- ✓ Date of prescription issuance
A digital signature (image of doctor's signature embedded in PDF) is legally sufficient. It does not need to be a cryptographic digital signature for prescriptions.
The Photo Rx workflow: 10 seconds start to finish
- 1 Doctor writes prescription on paper (their normal habit)
- 2 Staff opens DhiDoc, selects the patient, taps Photo Rx
- 3 Camera opens — snap a photo of the paper
- 4 System auto-crops, boosts contrast, generates PDF
- 5 PDF wrapped in clinic letterhead with doctor signature
- 6 WhatsApp sends the PDF to patient — arrives in seconds
- 7 Copy archived to patient record — searchable forever
Why this beats typing prescriptions
Digital typing takes 3-4 minutes per prescription including double-checking medication spellings. Photo Rx takes 15 seconds. For a doctor seeing 40 patients a day, that's 2+ hours saved daily — without asking the doctor to change anything.
What to do when patients lose their prescription
This will happen. Even with WhatsApp delivery. Here's the recovery flow:
- ✓ Patient messages "I lost my prescription"
- ✓ Receptionist searches patient by phone in DhiDoc
- ✓ Opens their visit history, taps the Rx from the relevant visit
- ✓ Taps "Resend" — WhatsApp delivers again
- ✓ Total time: under 30 seconds
