What ABHA and ABDM actually are (in plain terms)
ABDM — Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission — is India's national health tech initiative. Think of it as UPI for healthcare: a shared digital layer that lets any hospital, clinic, or pharmacy exchange patient records securely.
ABHA — Ayushman Bharat Health Account — is the 14-digit health ID assigned to each patient. Like an Aadhaar for medical records. Every patient can create one; every clinic can integrate with the system.
ABHA is to health records what UPI is to payments. Patient owns their data, controls who accesses it, and can share it with any provider instantly. ABDM is the underlying infrastructure that makes it work.
Why 2026 is the year small clinics start caring about ABDM
Until recently, ABDM was mostly relevant for large hospitals. That changed in 2025-2026 with three developments:
- 1 Government insurance schemes require ABHA integration. Ayushman Bharat and state schemes increasingly require ABHA-linked treatment for claims. Non-integrated clinics can't bill these patients.
- 2 Patients are creating ABHA IDs at scale. Over 700 million ABHA IDs issued as of 2026. Your patients are asking about it.
- 3 New health insurance policies default to ABDM. Star Health, HDFC Ergo, and others prefer ABDM-linked providers. Referrals flow to integrated clinics.
The 4 levels of ABDM integration for clinics
- ✓ Level 0 — Ignore. Not sustainable past 2026 if you serve insurance patients or want government referrals.
- ✓ Level 1 — Manual ABHA acceptance. Ask patients for ABHA ID at intake, write it in your records. Zero technical integration.
- ✓ Level 2 — HFR/HPR registration. Register your clinic in the Health Facility Registry and yourself in the Health Professional Registry. Enables you to be found on ABDM.
- ✓ Level 3 — Full HIP integration. Your clinic software talks to ABDM. Patient consents to share records, they flow both ways. This is where DhiDoc comes in.

- 2 Register on HPR (Health Professional Registry) for each doctor. hpr.abdm.gov.in — takes 10 minutes per doctor.

Registering doesn't automatically make you technically integrated — it just makes you findable. But it's a required first step, and clinics who did it in 2024 are already seeing referral advantages.
